Help Heal Wounds Faster With Biotin

Biotin may help improve healing after periodontal surgery.

Reports indicate that vitamin B supplements, including biotin, help improve wound healing. Results from a small placebo-controlled clinical trial involving patients with periodontitis who underwent access flap surgery to repair it corroborate vitamin B's positive effects. The 30 adult study participants were randomly assigned to either a test group given a vitamin-B complex supplement or a placebo. The supplement included 50 µg of biotin.48

Healing was assessed in all patients at baseline and at one-week, two-week, one-month, three month, and six month intervals. Measurements utilized included bleeding upon probing, gingival index, plaque index, clinical attachment levels, and a BANA test for bacterial infection.48

Although there were no significant differences between the placebo and vitamin B group for some of the assessment measures, the test-group patients had significantly better clinical attachment levels for both shallow and deep wound sites from the surgery. This suggests that vitamin B, including biotin, used after AFS surgery may offer superior wound-healing capabilities.48
